Patient Story
Stephen Cutts – haemophilia patient
ACT has recently awarded £15,405 to the haemophilia centre at Addenbrooke’s for the purchase of up-to-date gym equipment in the Physiotherapy Outpatients Gym. Haemophilia is a hereditary condition that affects the body’s ability to clot blood. Bleeding into joints and muscles is the most serious problem for people with haemophilia. It causes swelling, cartilage and bone damage and eventually permanent joint damage. Therefore, strengthening the muscles around the joints can significantly help haemophilia patients.

Haemophilia patient, Stephen Cutts, age 49, has benefited greatly from using the new gym equipment. Stephen has been treated at Addenbrooke’s for haemophilia since he was 15 years old, and before recent operations to replace both knees, Stephen’s condition was so severe he was nearly wheelchair bound. Despite struggling to use the gym equipment immediately after his operations, he now has excellent mobility in his knees.
Stephen said: “Without this equipment my recovery would be nowhere near where I am now. It’s a massive help and has put my life back on track. There’s nothing I can’t do now.”
