TomoTherapy Appeal
The Tomotherapy appeal has been set up to raise £200,000 (over four years) to help fund Addenbrooke’s evaluation into the results of our revolutionary new Tomotherapy machine, which treats prostate cancer.
Addenbrooke’s Hospital is the first NHS hospital to obtain a Tomotherapy machine, having won a successful bid to the Department of Health. The first patient was successfully treated in October 2007. By the end of June 2009, 208 people had received the treament at Addenbrooke's, and the service continues.
Tomotherapy delivers a complex type of radiotherapy known as Image Guided Radiotherapy. This new type of radiotherapy targets the tumour with much greater precision than before whilst minimising radiation to surrounding healthy tissue.

Mr Selwyn Image, a prostate cancer patient (pictured right) said: “I consider myself brilliantly lucky to have been in the right place at the right time to have this innovative treatment on the NHS.”
Prostate cancer is currently the second most common cause of cancer deaths in the UK. Each year 35,000 men are diagnosed with the disease.
Improving the outcomes for these patients is at the forefront of the Tomotherapy evaluation project. Results are likely to influence radiotherapy over the next decade or more and donations to this project will be providing a direct benefit to cancer patients, both nationally and internationally.
